The Story of Kilobolt and Our Next Great Journey

October 26th, 2014
Dear Kilobolt fans,

When my colleagues and I first founded Kilobolt and decided that we would like to start making games of our own, we were just a group of confused teenagers who didn't know the first thing about developing games, let alone running a game development studio.

We have since come a very long way. Thanks to the amazing support from fans like you, we were eventually able to find a niche in the vastness of the Internet as a popular tutorial site for aspiring developers. Since our website went live in July 2012, nearly a million people from almost every country on our planet have written "Hello, world" using our tutorials. To this day, Kilobolt.com is ranked number one on Google searches for Android game development.

Despite these and many unnamed successes, however, we have always felt like we have veered too far from our original vision for our company. And in recent months, we have started asking ourselves how we can make Kilobolt fun and meaningful again. After much consideration, my colleagues and I have decided that we will be making major changes to our company based on two fundamental ideas: a return to our roots and the use of our talents for something greater than ourselves.

1. Beginning in November we will begin operating as a non-profit organization. Kilobolt's new primary goal will be to create awesome games... in order to raise support and awareness for issues that we feel very passionate about. All of our profits, whether they be from commissioned work or from projects of our choosing, will go to charitable organizations that are working to make the world a better place for all of us.

2. In line with our goals, we will be introducing a new website on Kilobolt.com, and all previously-created content will be archived on http://tuts.kilobolt.com. There will be no further updates to the tutorials in the foreseeable future. I understand that some of you may be disappointed by our decision to stop producing tutorials, but my hope is that you will continue to support us as we pursue our new goals. In fact, if you would like to be involved with us in any way (whether as a beneficiary or supporter), please reach out to me at jamescho7@kilobolt.com.

Thank you again for all the appreciation you have shown us throughout the years. It has been a truly humbling experience building relationships with those of you who are so passionate about becoming better developers. I wish you the best of luck in all of your endeavors.

Kind regards,
James Cho
